  • Overview

    Sets up and operates computer numerically controlled machines to perform machining operations such as turning, boring, facing, and threading parts such as castings, forgings, and bar stock.

     

    Responsibilities

    • 1st Responsibility - Ensuring personal safety and the safety of your team members.
    • Assists supervisors and managers in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
    • Wears appropriate PPE which may include fall protection, respiratory protection, hearing protection, foot, hand, head and eye protection.
    • Uses proper lifting and ergo techniques.
    • Follows detailed job specific instructions to make sure castings are produced in the most efficient manner and to meet customer specifications.
    • Reads blueprints to ensure parts are produced according to required tolerances and specifications
    • Reads process sheets, blueprints, dimensional specifications, set up, and operating requirements.
    • Selects and applies proper tooling and control settings.
    • Able to set up and operate CNC mills and lathes.
    • Able to make modifications to machine offsets as needed, to ensure the machined parts are within blueprint tolerances.
    • Selects and installs tooling in tool posts, turrets or indexing heads, and automatic tool change magazine, in sequence specified on process sheet or program.
    • Mounts workpiece between centers, in chuck, fixtures or to faceplate.
    • Inspects first run piece and checks succeeding pieces for conformance to specifications.
    • Studies job packet and organizes materials for next run during automatic controlled cycles to shorten changeover time.

    Qualifications

    Education and/or Experience

    • High school diploma/GED plus six months related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Machining Tool Technology certification preferred.
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
    • Knowledge of shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
    • Working knowledge of mills, lathes, and turning equipment.
